It all started with a bus…
2015: Michael Mandina and Jeff Eric purchase a used school bus; they begin the process of redesigning and constructing additional structures to transform the bus into a float.
2016: The bus is entered into its first Mardi Gras parade.
2018: Becky Major and Michael Mandina met and officially formed the Krewe De Isle of Misfits; The bus was coated in unprecedented amounts of gold glitter and sealed with polyurethane.
2019: Front deck was added to the bus, and improvements were made to the existing top deck; The krewe came together to decorate for that year’s Christmas parade, which resulted in our first trophy win!
2020: The golden bus had one final run this year before being revamped, but shortly after Mardi Gras, the world shut down; practically everyone on the planet isolated into their own small social bubbles, and we were no exception. During this strange time, the krewe came together when they could. Some of us helped to use donated fabric to make handmade masks to be given out, some of the more musically inclined members engaged in socially distanced concerts, and virtually all of us used this time to work on honing our creative skills in one way or another.
2021: While we had all been hoping for things to improve by the time Mardi Gras rolled around, it was ultimately deemed too big a risk to the public, so the event was cancelled for the first time in living memory. However, the world began to open back up, and by July, we were able to have parades once again; The bus received a NASA rocket-ship-inspired makeover, and we entered into the 4th of July parade wearing our spacey best; later on, as Winter approached, we painted the bus black and entered into the Christmas parade as the “Krambus” featuring dark Krampus themed costumes to match!
2022: This year marked the krewe’s official return to Mardi Gras, and it was truly one for the books; We kept the bus blacked out, and decided our theme would be post-apocalyptic. Some of us were fashioned as wanderers in the wasteland, others came as futuristic cyber punk robots, and we even had some apocalyptic battle lords on board as well. Our creative costumes and highly detailed bus decor (not to mention the projections, light design, and live music on the top deck) won us our second trophy, as you can see below!
We hope to continue our tradition of making Mardi Gras a crowd-wowing creative experience for our krewe as well as festival goers, and we are looking forward to many more fabulous parades in the future!
